Hotter than July!

This week, we are focussing on the heat! London is very hot and sometimes humid at the moment, which makes it sweaty and sometimes uncomfortable. Those of you who live in countries where it is always hot in the summer may be wondering why most houses don’t have air conditioning or why the buildings aren’t built so that they let heat out or where the shade is. The reason is the UK is a maritime climate, you are never more than 100 miles from the sea and we don’t have extreme or predictable weather, so we are never ready for any of the weather that comes our way. It’s simply not worth investing millions in dealing with the heat when next summer, it may rain throughout.

Just as we gave you some tips when we unexpectedly had snow, here are some tips now that we unexpectedly are in a heat wave.
So, we want to help you survive the heat with some top tips for staying cool:

Tip #1 – Make sure you wear sunscreen when you go out – it’s dangerous to get sunburn and take particular care with the back of your neck etc
Tip #2 – You need good sunglasses – the sun can burn your eyes too so don’t go out without them
Tip #3 – Make sure you keep hydrated – take a bottle of water with you when you go out and cut down on your alcohol – if you drink alcohol when you are dehydrated, its going to make you feel worse
Tip #4 – Buy a fan and leave it on at night so the air is moving and you can keep cool
Tip #5 – Wear linen – this is the coolest fabric or cotton
Tip #6 – Take a face cloth with you when you go out, you can get rid of the sweat
Tip #7 – If you have a car, Halford’s can fill up your air conditioning
Tip #8 – Wear a hat
Tip #9 – Go to the sea, lots of people who have grown up in the UK have great memories of family days at the beach.

We will be sharing more tips throughout the week so follow us and we would love you to share any ideas you have for coping with the heat on Facebook or Twitter.
